So if you pay attention to poetry in your everyday life, if you’re like, I look here and I look at this tree and suddenly that’s a poem, I hear lines of poetry, I recognize the poetry in this, that’s poetic trace.

There are four kinds of trace. There’s poetic trace. There’s safety trace, when you look around yourself and you try to, as an autistic person, train yourself to recognize when things may be dangerous, so you start to train yourself throughout the day and you’re like, okay, it’s one o’clock, we’re going to look and see what around me could be dangerous right now. That’s safety trace. Then there is romantic trace, where you try to train yourself to recognize what small things that you do in your daily life could be beneficial to your romantic relationship, and then there is critical trace, where you try to interrogate the world around you critically, as in the teachings of bell hooks, where you try to be a critical thinker about the world around you and interrogate things further than you normally would.

So that’s trace tracking theory, and the theory is basically that you can train what your brain recognizes in day-to-day life through repeated, purposeful training of your attention to be aware of traces. The second concept that ties into trace tracking theory is attention as a force.

My concept of attention as a force is that in scientific experiments, specifically double-slit experiments, when you observe a particle, it changes its state. A quark changes its state based on superposition when it is observed or acted upon by an outside force, and there was for a long time the notion that somebody observing quantum superposition would affect the quantum superposition by ending it, and that led to the notion that our attention, in and of itself, is a force. Our looking at something, our observing something, is a force that affects the world around us.

There are several kinds of particles, but quarks are my favorite kind of particle, so that’s what I focus on. Everything on the scale of particles goes into quantum superposition because that’s the quantum scale, it’s down there, Planck scale, and basically the particles in an unobserved state, an unacted-upon state, do not change, they exist in quantum superposition, and then when acted upon by energy or observation, they pick a state. They’re like, well, we’re going to do one thing now.

I actually use the concept of observable quantum superposition in one of my books to create a non-nato-dimensional periodic table of elements that uses particles that are able to exist perceivably in superposition in order to make a new layer of atoms and particles that can be observed in superposition, and then I wrote a sci-fi novel about it. It’s going to be an audio drama. I got funding to make it this year. That’s not the essay, but I think it’s pretty lit.

The essay is: How is our attention a force in the lives of the people around us?

By paying attention to a child, you literally are teaching that child what it feels like to have attention paid to them, because a baby doesn’t know the experience of being attended to until someone teaches it what it’s like to be attended to, and that comes to my question of what are we doing to children by putting them in front of devices that cannot pay attention back. What happens to a child when they are raised by a device that cannot respond or interact with them by paying attention back to them?

The kids aren’t all right. I’m a teacher too. The kids are not all right. iPads are bad at their job. Correction. iPads are bad at parenting. At least we got therapy and, like, a submodicum of attention from our parents. I worry. Also, are they going to be able to read? Is Gen Beta going to be able to read? Somebody help.

Everything behaves differently when observed, and the question I have is, in terms of children who are under-attended to, because nothing changes unless it’s interacted with, in order to change the people our children become for the better, we owe them human attention, and I think that because they grow up not being paid attention to, it creates a feedback loop.

It’s the difference between stimulation and attention. They’re not the same thing. Stimulation and attention can be different because attention presumes intent. An iPad produces stimulation, but it doesn’t see you back. It doesn’t love you, and love, as we have discussed, is in and of itself the strongest form of attention. Attention is fundamentally an interaction that changes a system over time, and children are organizing themselves as children. When we grow up, we organize ourselves in response to interaction. That’s how attachment theory works. That’s how co-regulation and our neural development work. A child’s brain develops through responsive interaction, and stimulation is going to stimulate, but it’s not going to respond and interact.

So when we deny our children attention, we are fundamentally denying them attachment. We are fundamentally denying them the ability to develop co-regulation skills, and we are impacting and damaging their neural development. I think the most important distinction is that an iPad is stimulation, is input with no relationship, no feedback loop, and no recognition of the child as a subject.

Because think about it this way: You have to be recognized as a subject by other people around you in order to develop your sense of self, because we develop our identities, our sense of self-esteem, all of these things, in response to how people have treated us. You might think, I’m a smart person, and you might identify as smart rather than pretty because people around you said you’re smart, you’re smart, you’re smart when you were growing up, or you got good grades, or something gave you the feedback that you were smart, and you may have never gotten any sort of input as to whether you were pretty.

You may have been pretty, but being smart was more recognizable to people, and so you developed the notion that you’re not pretty because you saw other people getting feedback that they were pretty and you didn’t get feedback that you were pretty, and now you perceive yourself as less attractive because, during your developmental years, your brain was not trained to have the feedback and recognize and build your sense of self around the idea that you have the ability to be attractive to people.

That’s why it’s dangerous. That’s why it’s so dangerous for children. AI is dangerous for anyone who doesn’t have a strong sense of self. If you’re lonely, AI is extremely dangerous because what is being lonely other than lacking attention as a force in your life? And that’s the most dangerous thing someone can be in your life, is a yes man, because a yes man never pushes back, never challenges you, and never tries to get you to be better.

Love being sustained, responsive, invested attention over time makes love inherently an act. Love is inherently an act, just like intention, attention itself is a form of intention, attention is an act, and I think we need to talk about that more because we are being literally robbed of our attention every single day by social media. We live in an attention economy. People have commodified and monetized and kidnapped our attention, and we need to talk about that because what it’s doing to our children is dangerous.

Basically what happens without attention is a child signals, they give you a signal of I’m happy, and nobody smiles back, and their internal states don’t get named. Nobody says, oh, you look sad, Timmy. You self-organize your nervous system because of the interactions you have with other people, and when you have to self-organize your nervous system based on faulty information or no input at all, you develop dysregulation, you have difficulty developing identity, and you seek stimulation instead of connection, which is just as dangerous, and it’s putting a lot of kids that we have these days in grave danger.

We’ve seen what happens. It all comes back to attachment theory. How does a child behave when their parent did not give them the attention they needed to develop into a person who has secure attachments?

My main arguments that I’m proposing are that responsive attention is fundamental for shaping healthy pathways in children, and the absence of attention leaves their systems, their neurological systems, unstructured, and that artificial stimulation does not and cannot replace intentional interaction. You can be communicated with by technology in some ways, especially now with AI, but they can’t recognize you, they can’t love you, and they can’t adapt to your inner state. Your AI can’t look at you sitting there on the couch before you even open the app and say, something’s wrong, and you’re like, no, nothing’s wrong, and they’re like, I’ve known you for ten years, I know something’s wrong.

Children need to be met. They don’t just need input. They need to be met by a human. Have you ever heard of the cloth mother versus wire mother experiment that they did with monkeys? They literally had an experiment where they had a fake monkey that was made of wire that had milk and a fake monkey that was made of soft, fluffy fabric, and consistently, the baby monkeys chose the monkey that was made of soft, fluffy fabric that they could cuddle, that they could feel love or warmth from, over the one with nutrients, and that goes to show children are desiring that affection, that closeness, that humanity, that attention. Keeping the child alive is no longer enough. You have to attend to, you have to pay attention to the child for that child to grow up and be okay.

I don’t think any child is a lost cause. I think it fundamentally starts with reestablishing a notion of trust and mutual understanding between you and your child. Your child has to trust you in order to want to talk to you, and they don’t trust somebody who has never shown that they will be there for them.

Children cannot self-regulate yet, especially small children. They don’t know how. You have to co-regulate small children because they have not learned and they don’t have the neurological wiring to self-regulate yet. They don’t know how. They physically can’t. Your child needs you to regulate.

Attention in being participation is an example of how love is the choice to participate in another person so consistently and so completely that they become more fully themselves because you were there. You have to teach a child how to become themselves. You have to teach a child how to recognize themselves.

This is what I have always wanted from society. I wanted a salon. I wanted people to come together and think and think beautifully. I wanted to be in a place where I could sit with my intellectual equals and say, we are going to discuss something, and we are going to be genuine about it, and we’re all neurodivergent, so we’re not going to have any of that weird subtext that makes things fucky, you know. We’re just going to be completely straightforward, honest, open, and intellectually excited.

And that’s the way we’re supposed to do it. That’s self-regulating. Period. My mother always says, if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.

Share Alora Young| Savants&Syntax

Closing Note

I AM NOW ACCEPTING NEW TUTORING CLIENTS!

Thank you for reading and signing up for my newsletter. A dopamine deficiency stole it from you. I’m going to say that plainly, because I’m tired of the language that blames people for the neurological conditions that shape their lives. I’m tired of watching brilliant, creative, capable people sit in front of tasks they care about and feel nothing but resistance so intense it feels like pain. I’m tired of systems that call that laziness. I’m tired of a world that refuses to understand the brain it is trying to control. I’m about to teach you how to get it back.

The Origin

I build learning systems that actually work for the kinds of brains we keep pretending don’t exist. I’m getting a PhD in neurodivergent creativity and I make tools for neurodivergent people that nobody else will, because I’m the one who decided to stop waiting for permission. This is a big breakdown on how to dopamine farm, and I need you to understand that this started as a survival mechanism. It started with my own executive dysfunction, with the repeated experience of wanting to do something and being physically unable to begin, with the realization that willpower was never the missing variable. Before you start any task, you need to use strategies to improve your dopamine levels to the point where you can physically do the task without it feeling like you are chewing off your own arm.

This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

The neurodivergent brain is wired differently than a neurotypical brain, and one of the ways that shows up is motivation. Neurotypical people are motivated by the importance of a task. A neurodivergent brain is motivated by this acronym, and this acronym only. Interest, novelty, challenge, urgency, passion, nothing else. That is a structural rule. Your brain is wired for INCUP, so what you do is you find a way to connect your task back to your passion, or you inject novelty, or you create urgency, or you raise the challenge, because those are the actual levers available to you.

I learned this from failing, repeatedly, and then noticing the rare moments where I could suddenly do things. There were moments where my brain would unlock, where starting felt possible, where momentum existed, and those moments had a common denominator. Dopamine. So I started experimenting. Before you start any task, you need to use these strategies to improve your dopamine levels. You need to dopamine farm to the point where you can physically do the task without it feeling like you are chewing off your own arm. That sentence came out of my body because it was true in my body.

Share

What Dopamine Farming Is

What is dopamine farming. It is actively using science, ways to develop and encourage dopamine production in your brain without medication. It also works if you are on medication, and you should be, you really should, because this is pro-access. It is a new innovative technique that I have been developing as a neurodivergent person who develops tools for neurodivergent people. That sentence matters to me, because I’m building from inside the experience.

The early versions were chaotic. Ways to stimulate dopamine. Sour candy, strong but pleasant smells like perfume or oranges, preferably multiple smells in rapid succession, perfumes work really well for this. Five sit ups, just five, it is a tool to wake up your brain. I was trying to flip a switch. I was trying to find repeatable inputs that created reliable activation. There is a scientific term for the state of low dopamine, under stimulation. It receives less public attention than over stimulation, and I would argue it has enormous impact on long term success. Under stimulation is invisible, it looks like laziness, it feels like failure, and it is a neurochemical state that deserves language, precision, and intervention.

The Neuroscience of the Barrier

Here is something I learned in the neuroscience part of my research. The mechanism that keeps a kid with ADHD from doing a task they are procrastinating on is actually on a brain scan the same mechanism in your brain that keeps you from being able to chew off your own arm, unless you are trapped under a boulder and chewing off your own arm is the only thing between you and dying. The exact same mechanism. That is how unfathomable it feels. That is how serious it is. This is a self-preservation system misfiring in a modern context.

Dopamine farming works because dopamine is the chemical that allows you to begin doing something in the first place, it is part of a system that includes the ventral tegmental area, the nucleus accumbens, the prefrontal cortex, entire pathways that regulate motivation, initiation, prediction, and movement, and when that system is underactive you don’t get a clean signal that says start, you get static, you get friction, you get that horrible buffering feeling where your brain knows what to do and your body refuses to follow, and that is a neurochemical threshold issue, and I needed to understand that in a way that was specific and usable, both academically correct and operationally actionable, so I studied where dopamine is produced, how it is released, how novelty spikes it, how anticipation spikes it, how sensory input modulates it, how movement feeds into it, how even the gut plays a role in neurotransmitter production and signaling, because a significant portion of neurotransmitter precursors are tied to gut function, microbiome health, metabolic processes, all of these systems are deeply entangled, and I started building a model of the brain that was mechanical, and once you understand the mechanism you can intervene in the mechanism, you can design inputs that produce outputs, you can farm dopamine on purpose.

ADHD brains have lower baseline dopamine availability and altered dopamine transport, which means the signal for motivation is inconsistent, delayed, or insufficient, which means tasks that produce dopamine through interest, novelty, challenge, urgency, or passion will initiate more readily, and tasks that arrive stripped of those qualities often remain inaccessible, and that is why people with ADHD can hyperfocus for twelve hours on something they love and struggle to start a five minute task that is important, because dopamine is the governing variable in the system, and I refuse to keep pretending otherwise, so I solved the problem the only way I know how, I engineered around it, I built a system that injects dopamine triggers before task initiation, I built a system that lowers the activation energy required to begin, I built a system that acknowledges that task initiation is the hardest part and treats it as its own separate process, I created what I now call pre-task activation protocols, micro-dopamine bursts, sensory priming, embodied ignition, all of these little levers that you can pull to push your brain over the threshold where action becomes possible, and I tested it relentlessly, I tested combinations, timing, intensity, sequencing, I tracked what worked, what failed, what worked sometimes, what worked only under certain conditions, I treated my own life like a laboratory because I needed something that actually functioned.

The System

So I systematized it. I turned scattered experiments into a structured method. I mapped inputs, outputs, timing, combinations. I created categories, practical stimulation and creative stimulation, because brains need both. These dopamine farming cards are over 1,000 ways to encourage dopamine production in order to get your life back, and I don’t say that lightly. I built them for myself first, then I tested them on myself, and then I brought them into my nonprofit, because I give tools to children that I have proven in my own body.

I want you to be able to do what you dream. I think you deserve to be able to have the dopamine necessary to live the life you want to be leading right now. That is the moral center of this work. All it takes is the dopamine to do the thing. That is a reframing. I was only able to do all the things I did, being a youth poet laureate, a presidential scholar of the arts, getting into these academic spaces, building systems, because I had the dopamine to do it. I had access to the neurochemical threshold required to begin.

The results in my own life were immediate and undeniable, tasks that used to feel impossible became accessible, accessible is the word that matters, I could start writing when I needed to write, I could respond to emails, I could build systems, I could sustain momentum long enough to create meaningful work, and that changed everything about what I believed was possible for myself, and then I brought it into my nonprofit, into classrooms full of neurodivergent kids who had already internalized the idea that they were lazy or broken, and I watched them start, I watched them pick up pencils, open laptops, engage with tasks they had been avoiding, I watched their faces change when they realized the barrier lived in their chemistry, and that is a life-changing realization, that is the kind of shift that rewires identity, and the feedback has been overwhelming, in a deeply specific, deeply emotional, deeply practical way, students finishing assignments, teachers reporting increased engagement, parents saying their kids are finally able to start homework without a meltdown, therapists incorporating the cards into sessions, clinicians using them as a bridge between abstract neuroscience and real-world behavior, and my own therapist gives my cards to her other patients, which is one of the most surreal and affirming experiences of my life, because it means the system holds up outside of me, it means this is a replicable tool.

The Broader Framework

This is revolutionary because it reframes the entire conversation around motivation, productivity, and neurodivergence, it shifts the focus toward design, toward systems, toward building better, and alongside dopamine farming I have been developing a set of interconnected theories and pedagogies that expand this framework, ideas like dopamine gating, where the brain regulates access to action based on neurochemical thresholds, attention braiding, where low-stimulation tasks are paired with high-stimulation inputs to maintain engagement, embodied tasking, where identity and physical state are used as entry points for action, trace tracking, where attention leaves patterns that can be mapped and redirected, all of these concepts that treat the brain as something you can collaborate with, and I’m going to write about them in depth because I believe we are on the edge of a new way of understanding attention, creativity, and learning, one that is actually built for us, one that honors the shape of our minds, one that makes the world safer to be autistic in, safer to be ADHD, safer to exist as a brain that does not follow the default script, and I’m interested in systems-level transformation, I’m interested in building a world where no one grows up thinking they wasted their potential when what they were missing was access.

The Mission

I make these tools because my community deserves better. You deserve better. I’m a scientist, I’m an academic, I make these videos and these tools because I believe you can achieve incredible things no matter what people tell you about being a burnout or being a failure. I say that with my full chest, because I have seen what happens when people are given the right inputs and the right support.

I’m only selling these to fund my nonprofit where I teach middle schoolers in Tennessee how to survive in a world that is not designed for our brains, and that matters, because this work is not abstract. It lives in classrooms, it lives in bodies, it lives in the moment a kid realizes they are not broken. The cards come in two different packs, one that is practical, specifically ways that you can encourage dopamine in a practical sense like wiggling your fingers and toes one by one or doing sit ups or jumping jacks, these are all scientifically proven ways to encourage dopamine production, and then there is the creative pack, because creativity itself is a dopamine engine.

There are many tools now that use the language of dopamine, many systems, many products, many interpretations, and that is what happens when something works. Good ideas spread. People build on them. People remix them. The origin is intact. The system is deeper than the aesthetic. This work came out of my struggle with executive dysfunction, out of my research, out of my nonprofit classrooms, out of my insistence that neurodivergent people deserve systems that actually function for their brains.

I developed dopamine farming as a method, as a theory, as a set of practices, and as a physical tool in the form of these cards. I did it first, and I did it with rigor, with testing, with community, with a commitment to making the world a place that is safe to be autistic in, safe to be ADHD, safe to be different in a way that allows full selfhood. I will keep building. I will keep refining. I will keep teaching. Because this was always about access, about dignity, about giving people their lives back.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Closing Note

Thank you for reading and signing up for my newsletter.
